The Badger - Bernard Hinault

For those of you who didn’t get to see the very end of yesterday’s stage in the Tour De France, then you missed an awesome sight. Bernard Hinault, 5-time winner of the tour, was standing on the side of the podium next to stage 3 winner Samuel Dumoulin, who was receiving his applause from the crowd.  A French protester hopped on stage before Hinault, who without hesitation, shoved the man off the podium and into the arms of a waiting gendarme.

Hinault has always had this reputation amongst fellow riders. He was respected by riders but feared by many for his temperament. Unfortunately, I was too young to see him in action. However, I did have the opportunity to meet him once back in 1994 at Lac de Madine, and he was a real gent.

After yesterday’s performance we can now see why he’s not called the Badger for nothing!
