So I’ve been thinking of different items to place on my blog that would hopefully be of use to all those that visit this page. One thing that did come to mind was the twitter profiles of all the British professional cycling teams and riders. There isn’t a single source available where you could find this (well. not that I could find), so thought I’d give it a go.

The teams and their twitter profiles are:

Barloworld rider, John Lee Augustyn, today endured a spectacular crash during the 16th stage of the Tour de France which left him stranded halfway down a mountain side.

Augustyn crossed the summit of the day’s second unclassified climb on his own after attacking his leading group half a kilometre from the summit. But moments later, after being rejoined by his group, he misjudged a right hand bend and, despite braking, his momentum threw him over the edge to leave him 50 metres below on the gravelly mountain side.

After dusting himself off and waiting for a new bike he eventually finished in 35th place at just over five minutes behind stage winner Cyril Dessel of the AG2R team.

Let’s hope Augustyn’s legs are feeling good for tomorrow’s stage up Alp d’Huez.

What a bum ride the Barloworld team have had in this year’s Tour. Last year the team made the Tour as a wild card entry and proved their worth with stage wins from Robert Hunter and Mauricio Soler. Soler also went on to win the overall King of the Mountains competition.

With a team poised for success in the year’s Tour, nothing could go wrong. Or so we thought. Soler crashed on the first stage and after a few kilometres into stage 5 pulled out of the event with a fractured wrist.

On stage 11, the team lost Colombian Felix Cardenas and Italian Paolo Longo on Wednesday’s 11th stage. Cardenas, a former stage winner in both the Tour and the tour of Spain, injured a tendon in his left leg. Longo fractured his a collarbonein a crash around the 50km mark of the same stage. To add to the team’s misfortune that day, Moises Duenas tested positive for banned substances (ie. blood booster EPO).

And just when things couldn’t get any worse, Australian Baden Cooke became the team’s fifth rider to leave the Tour. After crashing in the early parts of yesterday’s stage 12, Cooke decided enough was enough and pulled out the Tour.

The South Africa sponsored (but British-registered outfit) are now down to just four riders: Robert Hunter, John Lee Augustyn, Gianpaolo Chuela and Christopher Froome.

Let’s hope they can make the remaining nine stages (if you include today’s stage) as a foursome, and maybe pull a stage victory out of the bag too (no pressure at all on you Hunter)?

A week on and I thought I’d check in on the the South African’s taking part in this year’s TdF, Robert Hunter and John Lee Augustyn. Today’s stage, #7, from Brioude to Aurillac has just finished and the overall classification results have come through.  So taking a look through these, I can confirm that our two SA boys are still in the race and doing pretty well.

Their standings in the General Classification are:

  • 89 – John Lee Augustyn
  • 90 – Robbert Hunter

Good going guys and keep it up! I’ll check in on them again next week and let you know how they are coming along.
